What is Psychotherapy?
The word ‘psychotherapy’ derives from the ancient Greek ‘therapia’ and ‘psyche’ meaning ‘curing and healing soul’. In psychotherapy/counselling, the therapist provides a private and confidential setting to assist the client to resolve any problem or difficulties for which they are seeking professional help. During the course of therapy, the client is encouraged to take a more active role to explore their own thoughts and feelings, and find appropriate solutions for their problem. The therapist is there not to judge, teach or preach, but to act as a ‘catalyst’ to help the client gain deeper awareness and insight that can bring change and relief.
Psychotherapy is not advisable for those who are in the midst of a psychotic episode or other serious mental illness which needs hospitalisation.
How long does it take?
To be effective, psychotherapy might take between a few weeks to few months and even a year. The length of psychotherapy will depend on the severity of the problem and what the client wishes to develop in his/her life. Sessions will be held once a week for usually an hour.

Mindfulness for sub-clinical depression
Employing an experimental, randomized-controlled design, we examined the impact of mindfulnessbased cognitive therapy (MBCT) on mental health and quality of life in a sub-clinically depressed population. The findings showed that MBCT was influential to help sub-clinical participants to deal with their anxiety and depressive feelings, and experience improved quality of life before in MBCT group, during and after stressful circumstances. Negative automatic thoughts and dysfunctional attitudes were also systematically reduced. Discussion. The findings provide the first evidence that MBCT might be a useful intervention for enhancing quality of life in sub-clinical populations.
Metaphors used by depressed people
This study was designed to examine qualitatively/quantitatively the metaphors used by Iranian depressed patients. Metaphors, used by depressed patients, seem to be associated with personal failings or inadequacies. They may also contribute to the basis to account for a cultural notion of “depression”. Methods/materials. Participants likened depression using metaphors connoting darkness, being unable to escape/being lost, devastation and disease.
The Valley of Loneliness is out now.
“… what is destiny and to what extent do we have a role to play in controlling the events of our lives? How much we can be effective in shaping our fate, life and death?”
This is the core theme of the four interconnected stories in The Valley of Loneliness. Apart from our ‘self’– that is, our decisions and behaviour- three other factors could determine our fate: ‘culture’, ‘societal rules and decisions’ and finally ‘accidents’. The stories unravel the intricate threads of fate, leaving readers pondering the fragility of life and the elusive nature of destiny.
